SYRACUSE - Some local costume retailers feared consumers would rem in spending this Halloween season in the wake of recent high-profile hurricanes and rising energy prices. However, strong sales at the cash register are proving otherwise, local storeowners say. We started off a little slow; I really feel that [Hurricane] Katrina look a number on people, Denise Dougherty Vinal, owner of Doughertys Fun Services, Inc., which operates the 10,000-square-foot Doughertys Masquerade store at 3011 Erie Blvd. East in Syracuse and its 3,400-square-foot counterpart at the Great Northern Mall in Clay. Now were starting to see an upward sweep, Dougherty Vinal says. Dougherty Vinal expects that sales at her two stores this Halloween season are likely to exceed last years. The nature of Halloween - the escape it offers - helps boost business even during challenging times, she adds. Halloween always pulls through at the end, even when things arent going so well, Dougherty Vinal says. Costume sales peak in the final two weeks of October, when last-minute shoppers flock to the store, Dougherty Vinal says. Other Central New York costume retailers are also having a good Halloweenshopping season. Sales at Cicero-based The Costume Depot are up 23 percent from October 2004, says Daryle Loguidice, Owner. The firm generates about 60 percent of its annual sales during the month of October, and Loguidice adds 10 short-term employees to his 14-person staff during this time, he says. Gearing up for Halloween The Costume Depot buys about 2,500 costumes in preparation for increased October sales, and has a rental inventory of about 6,000 costumes, he says. To manage the costumer surge, Dougherty Vinal hires 50 temporary sales associates for a four- to six-week period. Doughertys Masquerade begins to stock up on costume inventory as early as February. It purchases between 20,000 and 30,000 Halloween costumes, costing about $350,000, says Richard Vinal, vice president. This year, Star Wars characters, superheroes, pirates, and time-period costumes are the top-sellers, Dougherty Vinal says. About 80 percent of Doughertys Masquerade store sales are generated in the month of October, Vinal says. The Doughertys Masquerade stores generate about $1.2 million in sales annually, he says. Between the two locations and Doughertys online costume sales at the costume retailer generates $900,000 in sales during the month of October, alone, according to Vinal.
